NEWS > CLEANLEACH Presented at IBERFLORA Trade Fair

The fair is the largest showcase of the green industry on the Iberian Peninsula.

On 1-3 October 2014, CLEANLEACH was presented at the IBERFLORA Trade Fair, a leading showcase in Europe for horticulture, gardening and landscape architecture. The annual fair held in Valencia attracted 375 exhibitors this year and included over a hundred industry-related parallel activities.

One of these activities was the 6th Ornamental Horticulture Conference, where IRTA researchers Lola Narváez, Rafaela Cáceres and Oriol Marfà presented a poster on the efficacy of methanol as a source of carbon, based on the results obtained at the CLEANLEACH system pilot plant in Cabrils (Barcelona Province). (Download the poster here). The 6th Ornamental Horticulture Conference was organized by the Spanish Society of Horticultural Sciences (SECH) and the Portuguese Horticulture Association.

As part of the Horticultural Conference, the CLEANLEACH partners (IRTA, Naturalea and Buresinnova) led a technical workshop on 3 October 2014 in the IBERFLORA conference area. About 60 people, including nursery growers, gardeners, landscape architects and business people from the ornamental horticulture and gardening industry, attended the conferences where the CLEANLEACH project was presented. The first paper was read by Dr. Narváez and presented the problems arising from managing leachates from soilless horticulture, the environmental repercussions and the solutions developed by IRTA in different research projects.

Dr. Marfà then explained the features of the CLEANLEACH technological solution, which consist of slow sand filtering combined with horizontal subsurface-flow constructed wetlands to treat and sanitize the leachates on site using a closed system to eliminate the potentially contaminating elements (nitrates and phosphates).

Dr. Cáceres presented the project within the European Union's Eco-Innovation Programme, as well as its objectives, anticipated activities and the members of the consortium (IRTA, Naturalea, Buresinnova and Salix).

Jesús Soler from Naturalea described the experience of the first full-scale establishment using the CLEANLEACH system at a nursery in Maresme County (Barcelona Province).

Finally, Dr. Sílvia Burés from Buresinnova mentioned the different applications of the system being developed and assessed by her company in the fields of urban horticulture, soilless horticulture for consumption, plant architecture, greenhouse culture and plant cover.

The workshop ended with a lively, enriching discussion among the participants.
